FEMINIST AVANT-GUARD is an international group exhibition that includes works by 78 international women artists from the VERBUND collection, of which a special selection will be made for the exhibition in Novi Sad, with a special segment of works by artists from the MSUV collection. Among the artists presented in the VERBUND COLLECTION are: Judy Chicago, VALIE EXPORT, Sanja Iveković, Katalin Ladik, Cindy Sherman, Birgit Jürgenssen and others. Historically, women have been portrayed as a projection of male fantasies, prejudices and relationships. However, in the 1970s, there was a change in the way women were presented in art. Women artists started to explore visual representations of their own beings in order to create alternative views on the female identity. Gabriele Schor, as the director of the collection and editor of the accompanying monograph, has researched the feminist avant-garde to highlight the role which these artists have played in the last four decades. The results are radical, poetic, ironic, angry, cynical and cordial. Most of all, they are sincere, sharing a collective consciousness that has re-examined and rejected what previously dominated, turning to new ways of expression in the fields of photography, performance, film and video. The exhibition and the book highlight the achievements of women artists who encouraged and inspired those who developed on the experiences of their predecessors.

The exhibition of the VERBUND COLLECTION in Novi Sad will be expanded by addition of the exhibition of art works from the MSUV collection, i.e. the exhibition of artists from the geopolitical space of Serbia whose artistic practice transcends the traditional media and gender positions and operates in the international cultural space. The selected works, coming from women artists such as: Katalin Ladik, Milica Mrđa, Tanja Ostojić, Vesna Perunović, Bogdanka Poznanović, Jelena Radić, Judita Šalgo, Vesna Tokin and Milica Tomić, analyse the position of personal identity in contemporary art practice and society, explore the processes of performativity, immateriality, as well as the transgression of borders, and explore the idea of breaking through formal, media and spatial frameworks.
